THINKING ABOUT GOING VEGAN?

My recommended films and documentaries to watch:
(clicking an icon below will send you directly to the film)

  • The Game Changers - James Wilks travels the world on a quest for the truth about meat, protein, and strength. Showcasing elite athletes, special ops soldiers, and visionary scientists to change the way people eat and live.

  • What The Health - Filmmaker Kip Andersen uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases, and he investigates why the nation's leading health organizations doesn't want people to know about it.

  • Cowspiracy - Follow filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it.

  • Land of Hope and Glory - In 2005, a film called Earthlings became the most pivotal documentary of the animal rights movement. Here in the UK however, we found the phrase "that doesn't happen in our country" coming up far too much. We wanted to set the record straight. Through Land of Hope and Glory we aim to show the truth behind UK land animal farming by featuring the most up to date investigations as well as never before seen undercover footage, with a total of approximately 100 UK facilities featured throughout the film.

  • Blackfish - Blackfish is a 2013 American documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. It concerns Tilikum, an orca held by SeaWorld and the controversy over captive killer whales.

  • Okja - For 10 idyllic years, young Mija has been caretaker and constant companion to Okja - a massive animal and an even bigger friend - at her home in the mountains of South Korea. But that changes when family-owned, multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation takes Okja for themselves and transports her to New York, where an image-obsessed and self-promoting CEO has big plans for Mija's dearest friend. With no particular plan but single-minded in intent, Mija sets out on a rescue mission. (I cannot recommend this film enough)

  • CW// Land of hope and glory, Blackfish and Okja contain graphic images of animal exploitation. Okja is CGI but still very graphic and accurate to what happens to actual farm animals.

Why should I give up Dairy?

The dairy industry spends millions of pounds on advertising to achieve a perfect image for the consumption of the public eye e.g. cows grazing on open green fields and farmers being gentle with their happy cows?

Watch this four minute video that shows how cows are treated daily in the dairy industry.

Content warning: graphic images of animal abuse.

RSCPA Dairy Cattle Welfare standards

You can read the most recently updated official RSPCA welfare standards for dairy cattle report here.

Below are some screenshots taken directly from the report that highlight the severity of the exploitation within the dairy industry. This information is readily available to anybody with internet access. You would think that such abhorrent details would be hidden; however, this is standard practice.

Content warning: graphic depictions of animal slaughter.

Plant Milk

Oats are soaked in water, pulverised in a blender and then strained to produce a subtle-tasting plant milk. That's it.

The Egg Industry

Regardless as to whether they’re in free range or caged farming systems, hens lead an existence of pain and suffering throughout their shortened lives.

  • Free range - There is a common misconception that free range eggs involve hens roaming outside, happy and free. Yet the reality is that free range hens are actually kept in vast sheds with potentially thousands of other birds, few of which ever see daylight. Free range might mean cage-free, but EU legislation stipulates that as many as nine birds can occupy one square metre of floor space. Provided the bird-to-floor ratio is met, these laws do not stop chickens being stacked tier upon tier. They must be given some kind of outside access, but in such confined spaces only few birds are ever able to actually make it outside. Standard free range practice is to cut off a large portion of each hen’s beak with a hot blade without the use of painkillers so that hens in close confinement don’t peck each other. A hen’s beak is very sensitive, akin to a human’s fingertips. Research suggests that beak trimming leads to both acute and chronic pain with symptoms similar to those of human amputees who suffer from phantom limb pain. All commercial hens are sent to slaughter after around one year’s egg production despite having a natural life span of seven years.

  • Battery and ‘enriched’ cages - Battery farms consist of huge, windowless sheds housing thousands of hens who are crammed four or five at a time into small wire cages stacked on top of each other in rows. Each hen may have as little as 430cm² of space: too small to spread even one wing. In the EU, barren battery cages are banned in favour of ‘enriched’ cages, though these only provide 600cm² of usable space: less than an A4 size of paper.

  • Male chicks - Whether free range or factory farmed, male chicks are of no use for egg or meat production, and are killed almost immediately after hatching. They are either thrown into an industrial grinder (‘macerator’) while still alive or gassed to death, the preferred method in the UK.
